How to split a tip pool by hours worked
person’s share = distributable tips × (person’s hours ÷ total hours)First subtract any documented amount that is removed before distribution. Divide the remaining pool by total eligible hours to find the value of one worked hour. Multiply that rate by each person’s eligible hours.
Why the final cents may differ
Currency is paid to two decimal places, but proportional shares often contain fractions of a cent. This calculator rounds each share and assigns any remaining cent difference to the largest unrounded shares so the final distribution matches the pool exactly.
Use the rules your workplace actually follows
Some workplaces split tips equally, by hours, by points or by role. This calculator handles proportional hours. Under U.S. federal rules, eligibility for mandatory tip pools depends partly on whether the employer takes a tip credit, and managers and supervisors generally may not receive other employees’ pooled tips. State rules may be more protective.

Should a tip pool be split equally or by hours?+
Use the method established by your workplace. An hours-based split gives a larger share to people who worked more eligible hours.
Can I subtract a house tip-out first?+
Yes. Enter the amount as a deduction only if that matches the documented distribution method that applies to the pool.
Does this decide who is legally eligible?+
No. It only performs the arithmetic. Eligibility depends on the workplace and applicable law.
