How to calculate tip-out

Tip-out = tip-out base × percentage

Then subtract the tip-out from your gross tips. If you add wages, you can also see total earnings and what the shift paid per hour.

The important part is choosing the same base your workplace uses. Some restaurants calculate tip-out as a percentage of gross tips. Others use total sales, food sales or another sales category. A fixed dollar amount is also possible.

Tip-out examples

Based on tips$240 × 15% = $36

You keep $204 in net tips.

Based on sales$1,800 × 3% = $54

From $240 gross tips, you keep $186.

These examples show why “15% tip-out” and “3% tip-out” cannot be compared without knowing what the percentage is applied to.

What is a normal server tip-out percentage?

There is no single percentage that applies everywhere. Tip-out can depend on the restaurant, role, shift, sales mix and local law. Ask which employees participate, which sales or tips form the calculation base, and whether managers or supervisors are excluded where required.

In the United States, federal rules distinguish between traditional tip pools and nontraditional tip pools. State and local rules can be more protective. The calculator performs arithmetic only; it cannot determine whether a workplace policy is lawful.

Why track tip-out after every shift?

One shift tells you what you took home. A consistent record shows whether a job, role or weekday actually pays your time well. Record gross tips, tip-out, hours and wages together so that changes in the workplace or schedule remain visible.

TipHaven keeps those numbers together on your iPhone and calculates net tips, total earnings and true hourly earnings for every shift.
