iPhone field guide

Your iPhone can name a plant. A field app helps you remember it.

Apple already offers a useful photo lookup. Dedicated apps become valuable when you want more evidence, questions, notes and a collection.

Start with the tool already on your iPhone, then add a dedicated app when you need continuity.

Visual Look Up is useful for occasional supported photos. Oqvi is designed for repeated discoveries that include several botanical materials, notes, favorites and optional places.

Try Apple Visual Look Up first

Open a plant or flower photo in Photos, tap the information button and look for the plant or leaf symbol. If the symbol does not appear, Visual Look Up may not be available for that photo or region. Apple’s tool is convenient because it begins with an image already in your library.

When a dedicated plant identifier earns its place

01

Several clues

Keep the whole plant, leaf, flower, bark or cut surface together rather than relying on one frame.

02

Follow-up questions

Ask what features are distinctive or what additional angle may help.

03

Personal context

Add notes, favorites and an optional place so the find remains meaningful later.

04

A searchable history

Return by name, date, type or place instead of searching the camera roll.

Take a better identification set

  1. Show the whole subjectInclude the plant’s overall form and growth habit.
  2. Move closerCapture a sharp leaf, flower, bark patch or wood surface.
  3. Use natural lightAvoid heavy filters, deep shadow and blown highlights.
  4. Keep scale honestInclude a safe reference where size is not obvious.
  5. Record uncertaintySave alternatives and confirm important results elsewhere.

Read the privacy model, not just the feature list

Oqvi stores saved discoveries, notes and precise map locations in local app storage on the iPhone. Identification photos and questions you choose to submit are processed online. Other apps may use public observations, accounts or cloud collections; none of those models is automatically wrong, but they serve different intentions.

FIELD SAFETY

Identification results can be incomplete or wrong. Never rely on a photo or AI answer for edibility, toxicity, medical care, fire safety, structural use or another consequential decision. Confirm with a qualified expert.
