The American Migraine Foundation describes written journals, spreadsheets and smartphone apps as valid ways to record symptoms. Consistency, clarity and usefulness to you and your healthcare conversations matter more than the medium.
Paper, app or hybrid?
Printable diary
Best when you prefer handwriting, want a visible sheet and do not need automatic summaries.
Tracker app
Best when you want searchable history, date-range summaries, reminders or structured export.
Hybrid
Best when paper is easiest during an episode but a digital record is more useful before appointments.
Side-by-side comparison
| Question | Printable diary | Tracker app |
|---|---|---|
| Fast access | Excellent when the sheet is nearby | Excellent when the phone is already with you |
| Flexible notes | Free-form by default | Depends on the app’s fields |
| Search and totals | Manual | Usually easier |
| Appointment report | Bring or scan the pages | May offer PDF or other export |
| Backup | Requires copying or scanning | Depends on local storage, device backup or sync |
| Privacy | Physical control and physical-loss risk | Depends on storage, account, analytics and export model |
| Cost | Paper and printing | Free, subscription or one-time purchase |
Five decision questions
- What will be within reach during symptoms?
- Do you need confirmed symptom-free days or only episode records?
- Will you review patterns manually or want date-range summaries?
- How do you want to bring the record to an appointment?
- Which privacy and backup tradeoffs are acceptable to you?
A hybrid without double entry
Use paper for a minimal timestamp or bedside note, then transfer only the essential details to the primary digital record. Treat the digital entry as a later transcription, not as information captured at the original time. Avoid maintaining two complete histories that can silently disagree.
