Calendar guide · Frequency needs context

A calendar should show what you recorded—not quietly fill the gaps.

Monthly views make frequency easier to scan, but only when headache days, confirmed symptom-free days and unrecorded days remain distinct.

A calendar is a summary, not the underlying record

It is useful for seeing recorded frequency and returning to a date. It should let you open the episode details behind a marked day and should avoid treating missing entries as evidence of no symptoms.

What a useful headache calendar app should do

Show recorded days clearlyFrequency should be visible without opening every entry.
Preserve unknown daysNo entry is not the same as a confirmed symptom-free day.
Open the underlying episodeA square should lead back to timing, severity and notes.
Handle multi-day episodesThe record should not silently turn one episode into several—or several into one.
Use consistent severityColors need a legend and should not replace the actual value.
Export useful contextA calendar image alone may not be enough for an appointment.

The three day states that matter

Headache recorded

An entry exists for that day, with whatever detail was actually captured.

Symptom-free confirmed

The user deliberately recorded that no headache occurred.

Unknown

No usable record exists. The calendar should not guess.

Using 30-day and 90-day views

A 30-day view helps with a recent month and appointment preparation. A 90-day view makes changes in recorded frequency easier to see across several months. In both cases:

  • Keep the same severity scale.
  • Review the episode behind unusual days.
  • Separate recorded totals from missing-data assumptions.
  • Write down questions rather than declaring a cause from the visual pattern.

If you want a paper version, use the free 90-day migraine tracker.

Questions to ask before choosing a calendar app

  • Can I tell unknown and symptom-free days apart?
  • Can I edit an old entry without losing its original timing?
  • Can one episode span midnight or several days?
  • Can I open details from the calendar?
  • Can I export a useful date range?
  • Where does the record live, and is an account required?
